Semaglutide

On June 4, 2021, the FDA approved semaglutide, a new weight-loss drug, marking the first in nearly a decade.

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, is for adults with a BMI of 27 kg/m² or more with a weight-related condition, or a BMI of 30 kg/m² or more.

It mimics GLP-1, helping to lower blood sugar and reduce appetite. FDA trials showed it helped participants lose an average of 15% of body weight (about 35 pounds), with long-term results around 30%.

Semaglutide offers a significant new option for effective weight loss and improved glycemic control.

Tirzepitide

Tirzepitide is both a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. Tirzepatide mimics the GLP-1 hormone and the GIP hormone. The GIP hormone can also trigger insulin creation and sensations of fullness.

This means that it may offer a stronger weight loss result for those who are more insulin resistant.
